Using A GoPro For Better Travel Photos

Everyone, at some point in time, must have seen the alluring images and videos taken from a GoPro. Some talented few can “get it right” after a few tries while the rest of us might take a lot more tries and frustrations. So here are a few tips and tricks that would hopefully help you rack up better images and videos.

1. Save Battery Life

Battery life for GoPro is still likely to run out if you’re out the whole day on an adventure. The easiest way to save battery life is to turn off WiFi and not using LCD screen or the LCD BacPac. GoPro has a 170 degree wide angle shot – so you don’t actually have to worry about framing your shots (more of this below).

It is also a good idea to carry multiple fully-charged batteries with you.

2. Know How to Prevent Fogging

Fogging occurs in the camera housing when the air in the housing is humid and the external temperature drops (science bruh!). A way to prevent this is to keep the GoPro in the housing in a dry place before heading out.

Alternatively, RentAGoPro.SG has anti-fog inserts to prevent this. YAY

3. Know How to Prevent Waterdrops

Just as most divers might have been taught of this trick – lick the lens of your housing! This minimize water droplets on the housing lens.

Just remember to wash it before and after licking if you rented it!

4. Check that all Screws are tightened

This is to ensure your GoPro doesn’t take part in an extreme sport of its own (geez!). You wouldn’t want all your footages to go missing.

Scewing them tightly also ensures stability - imagine the horror if your GoPro has been pointing down at the floor all the time while you were filming!

5. Hold the Camera Steady

Due to the small size and light weight of the GoPro, it is often not easy to keep it steady, resulting in those annoying shaky videos.

Besides tightening all the screws, use both hands when possible. Another great tip is to press the GoPro against your chin or mouth – which is generally more stable than your hand. See this vid by MicBergsma:

6. Bring the GoPro Lower

As mentioned above, GoPro has a pretty wide field of view, if you are taking a selfie, it’s better to aim the center of the lens at your chest rather than your face. Otherwise, you’ll have a bunch of empty sky.

7. The Editing

Just because you use a GoPro doesn’t mean that your photos & videos will look all polished like those on GoPro’s YouTube channel. They are uploaded not without some post-productions. So do take some time to play around with the exposure, highlights, shadows and other basics.

Fret not, here at RentAGoPro.SG, we can help edit some your photos for free if you let us share your shots with the world . Video editing service is also available.
